What is Repair Café?
Repair Café is a global movement of free, community-organized repair events. Started in the Netherlands in 2009 by Martine Postma, there are now over 3,000 Repair Cafés in more than 40 countries around the world.
The concept is simple: bring your broken items to a free event, and skilled volunteers will try to fix them — while you watch and learn. It's about reducing waste, sharing knowledge, and building stronger communities.
Every item repaired is one less thing in the landfill, one less purchase needed, and one more skill shared.
Our Nevada County Chapter
Repair Café Nevada County is a volunteer-run initiative bringing the global repair movement to our beautiful Sierra Nevada foothills. We hold regular events at community venues like Banner Grange Hall and the Grass Valley Veterans Hall.
Our volunteers include retired engineers, professional seamstresses, hobbyist tinkerers, bike mechanics, and everyday people who love fixing things. Whether it's a busted toaster, a torn pair of jeans, or a bicycle that needs some love — we'll give it our best shot.
Founded and organized by Shirley and a growing team of dedicated community members, our chapter has repaired hundreds of items, saved thousands of dollars for our neighbors, and kept significant waste out of the landfill.
